NAEP reading scores for 17-year-olds were 285 in 1971 (before DoEd) and 287 in 2020 (40 years after DoEd) — a statistically insignificant 2-point gain. Meanwhile, inflation-adjusted per-pupil spending increased 280% since 1960. SAT verbal scores dropped from 466 in 1967 to 424 in 1980 and never recovered to pre-DoEd levels. The US ranked 11th out of 12 countries in the 1964 international math test — it has never been at the top.
